Benefits of Re-Financing
There are a number of benefits which may be associated with re-financing a home. While there are some situations where re-financing is not the right decision, there are a host of benefits which can be gained from re-financing under favorable conditions. Some of these benefits include lower monthly payments, debt consolidation and the ability to utilize the existing equity in the home. Homeowners who are considering re-financing should consider each of these options with their current financial

How debt management can help you
It is no secret that I am in quite a bit of debt. Luckily for me I am able to keep my head above the water. In fact, I am even making progress on paying that debt down. However, there are a lot of people that are out there that are having real problems keeping their head above the water when it comes to debt and managing their money. And for a lot of those people that are sinking under a big ole mountain of debt they consider filing for bankruptcy. Of course, that comes with its own set of probl

Americans failing the personal finance test
Still wondering why CPAs are spending so much time promoting the concept of financial literacy? It’s because, in the words of this CNNMoney article, Americans are "financially illiterate." We knew the situation was bad, but the article indicates the problem could be worse than first thought. "Even those with a college degree don’t have an understanding of the basic finance ideas," Dartmouth College economics professor Annamaria Lusardi told author Catherine Clifford. How bad is it? Overall cr

Removing the HELOC temptation
Lenders are starting to pull the plug on borrowers?? home equity lines of credit in light of the falling value of the collateral properties. They??re lowering limits or freezing the accounts, preventing the homeowners from borrowing more against their equity. Banks have certainly not been shy about giving borrowers more rope than they really need to hang themselves: ???You can afford this much house.??? These changes of heart by the banks are really to save their own skins, of course. ???Can??t pay

How to Get Paid on Time
I read a case study in this month??s Inc. Magazine about two partners who operate a hip-hop news Web site. The site is well traveled, but the partners are somewhat unfocused with a few tasks, including making sure advertisers pay on time. I admit that this has happened to me on occasion, but now that I use a payment tracker within QuickBooks, that??s no longer a problem. One of the worse situations in business is going after customers for payment, and if you work by yourself, the problem is ma

The Lifestyles Channel is having another theme day, and this one is inspired by the classic TV show, Quantum Leap loved that show!!! and the upcoming ???Leap Day???. Here??s a few little leaps through our marriage: 4 Years Ago: We were in our late 20s. We were the parents of two, a newly four year old and an almost four month old. We were still in a bit of credit card debt. Ten days after the death of my father, we were ten years ago today attending his burial at Arlington National Cemetery, as

Bob Burnett: Goin’ Down Slow
A memorable blues song goes, "I have had my fun, if I don’t get well no more…my health is failing and I’m goin’ down slow." The songwriter, St. Louis Jimmy Oden, probably had in mind the rough life of bluesman, but his lyrics could easily be used to describe the current state of the American economy. In an increasingly schizoid American society, public attitude about the economy rank as our most bizarre contradiction - supplanting even our love for violence coexisting with our desire to be

How I got interested in Personal Finance
The Digerati Life asks How did you get interested in Personal Finance? *rolls up her sleeves* Instead I am doing a timeline of events that kinda escalated my interest in Personal Finance out of necessity at the start, and then out of desire and overwhelming feelings of accomplishments towards the end. Circa 2000: My father falls off of a building and lands headfirst onto a metal beam, splitting his scalp open. My father has a stroke. Circa 2001: - I decide to leave the Naval Base and mo

Salary trap February 26th, 2008 What happens when a 24 year old, 3 years experienced software pro gets a CTC of 8 lakhs plus? Obnoxious
February 26, 2008: This afternoon I called Dominion Law Associates, Attorneys at Law in Virginia Beach, VA. They sent me a letter, threatening to sue and I wanted to tell them that I had written them and received no reponse. I also asked the date of the last activity on the Discovery card. All I can say is: Obnoxious. The fact that I have no money to pay means nothing. Being honest does not help. I can’t agree to a payment plan because I wouldn’t be able to fulfill the terms of the agreement.

IRS installments vs credit card debt
Paying US back-taxes: should I go for an installment plan or pay it all now, and pay off the credit card companies instead? I owe I think around 8,000 in backtaxes, and I’m going to owe more by April. I know I can set up an installment plan with the IRS, but I can’t tell what the rules are governing the interest rate, or how they compare with credit card interest rates. My hunch is that the IRS is better on interest rates, but harsher on upfront fees to sort this out. I can probably plot all
